God put foreign missions on our hearts in 2007, and within 2 years our hearts were heavy for orphans in Ethiopia. Through the process or bringing our sons home, we were blessed with compassion for the oppressed, specifically in Ethiopia. Less than 2 years later, we had loaded up our family of 5 and moved to Ethiopia to work with women living in the poorest community outside the capital. Like many other places and projects, living in Ethiopia turned out to be a stepping stone in God’s sovereign plan. Just 6 months into our stay, security issues caused our very sudden and heart wrenching departure.
While seeking refuge living with extended family outside Houston, Texas, we continued on our “Steadfast Mission” in Ethiopia, from a distance, and right here in Houston.
Keith stayed connected to the ministry in Ethiopia until it dissolved, and then he began mentoring the former director/coordinator, which led to helping him set up his own non-profit in Ethiopia working toward the same goal with even some of the same women.
Jessica began volunteering with a refugee ministry about an hour from where we live. These women fled their home countries because of genocide or religious persecution and have been relocated to Houston by the United Nations. Many of them are in the same walk of life as the women in Ethiopia.
God is using our passion for the oppressed in different avenues as we thought. But He still gets all the glory. If not for His loving us and the love He placed in our hearts for others, none of this could have happened.
